We have good news about our backyard pigs, but we haven’t gotten to where we are the way we expected to.
We expected that our American Guinea Hogs would be out around our property, set up in rotating pastures, happily chewing on the variety of forage available to them.
However, things aren’t going that way. The just keep getting out. Over and over again. It is possible that what we need to do is start over and retrain them to be scared of even a single electric fence wire. Perhaps if we were to do that the problem would go away, but we aren’t sure if it would.
Until that time we are keeping our pigs in an electric net fence which has camping tent stakes holding down the fence every 4 feet so the pigs don’t just lift the fence up with their snout and get out that way.
While that is keeping our pigs in, that isn’t how we wanted to raise them at all. Now they are stuck on a diet of hay and pellets, which is certainly keeping them growing. It just wasn’t our ideal situation. After all, we did want to raise pastured pigs.
The good news is that one of our sows has farrowed. We now have 6 little piglets running all over the place. And run they do! I never realized how active little piglets are. They even chase and other and bounce around, just like little rabbits or goats. I’m not sure why, but I just never would have expected that from piglets.
The piglets were born on Easter Day, back on March 27th. And, even though American Guinea Hogs are a slower growing breed, there is no mistake that they are getting bigger all the time!
This brings me back to why I mentioned the fencing. American Guinea Hogs are very gentle. We can go play with the piglets, the boar can be in with the piglets, or anything else you can imagine, all with mama pig right there, and nobody cares. Mama pig doesn’t chase us out, the boar doesn’t bully the piglets. Nothing like that.
However, we did want to give mama pig a rest and make sure that the boar would leave her alone. We put a lot of effort into stopping him from getting to her, but he just puts up with the pain and gets to his lady. Sigh. I guess we’ll just have to let nature take its course!
