Big Family on a Small Farm

New Baby Rabbits

Hey Everybody. For as much as we get winter weather here in the south, it’s been a miserable week.

Right as these rabbits were kindled, it started getting down right at the freezing mark and we’ve had pretty much rain the entire time except for a little bit of freezing rain, so we’ve been holding off on trying to do a video about these rabbits that were born, but we’re tired of waiting.

We really just want to show you guys what we have, so we decided to give mama rabbit a big treat and while she’s a little bit distracted, we brought her babies inside to shoot the video.

So, it turns out we have six baby bunnies. Four are mostly black and two are the colors of a chinchilla. There’s not as much as a color variation as we thought there was going to be.

It surprised us because we mixed a black New Zealand buck with a white New Zealand doe. We expected that there would be a plethora of color variations manifesting themselves, but that isn’t really what ended up happening. Mind you, we aren’t disappointed, we love the bunnies, but we are a bit surprised.

We have what we keep calling a black New Zealand and really, it’s got a white paw, so there’s some genetics happening in there, but we know that the mom is a true New Zealand white, so we expected a little more color variation, but maybe our expectations were a bit ignorant for lack of a better word.

So here’s what we’re gonna do, keep an eye on the channel, we’re gonna bring a couple experts onto the channel and ask them about rabbit genetics and maybe if this is something we could have planned for and what, the pros and cons are about having a white furred verses a black furred or any other color of rabbit.

So stay tuned and we’ll bring you more about the rabbits in the future.
